Langridge Organic

With over 30 years experience in the organic fresh produce industry, Langridge Organic has built a network of organic growers throughout the UK that we work closely with to bring our customers the freshest organic produce possible.

The business started it’s life amongst the rolling hills of Mid-Devon in 1969 when Uncle Bernard Govier bought Langridge Farm and started growing vegetables the old fashioned way, without the use of chemical aids. We still have very close ties to our family farm near Crediton in Devon, which has been successfully farmed by Bernard Govier, our founder and his family since 1969. In the early days the farm’s produce was sold to shops in and around Exeter, before supplying shops and restaurants in and around London.

Since the early days of only selling produce grown on our own farms we have partnered with more and more trusted organic growers around the UK, and today we have growers as far apart as Italy, South Africa and Argentina whilst all the time continuing to source from the UK wherever possible.

We have partnered with Langridge Organic to supply organic fruit and vegetables from across the UK and Europe. Sourced from their network of trusted farms this enables us to offer customers a broader range of produce, especially during the fallow months of Spring and Early Summer.
Langridge Organic have a no-airfreight policy and endeavour to reduce the amount of plastic used for their produce, and we believe this fits the Furrow ethos, as well the expectations of our customers.

Close Farm

Close farm located in Tetbury, Gloucester, is managed primarily by me (Fred). Whilst assisted by some able volunteers, I work as the solely employed grower, so I tend to be quite busy. The farm is an extensive affair with a bank of polytunnels supplementing a 3-acre market garden and a further 4 acres of field crops where the likes of potatoes are grown. The market garden is also the location for an extensive collection of traditional and rare apple trees – arranged to create crop alleys that enable crops to be grown between the trees, feeding on the leaves and other detritus that falls and fertilises the ground.

HRH Prince of Wales’ belief in the advantages of organic farming resulted in the decision in 1985 for Duchy Home Farm (of which our farm is the fruit and vegetable section) to be turned into an organic farm – both for livestock as well as crops. This endeavour took place back when organic was still a relatively new concept – so a bold move at the time. In becoming organic, the Prince of Wales has worked closely with organisations such as Soil Association, Sustainable Food Trust, Garden Organic and Organic Research Centre. At the same time, organic farms have been promoting education and research into the links between food, farming, health and the environment.

New Farm Organics

The Edwards family first began farming in Lincolnshire in the 1700’s. Many of the traditional farming methods currently employed by New Farm Organics have been passed on through the generations, from father to son. It is this rich heritage and experience that has been fundamental to New Farm Organics success in pioneering the growth of UK organic farming. New Farm Organics consists of two farms. One of them has been free of pesticides and artificial fertilisers since the 1800’s, with both becoming officially organic in 1988.

New Farm’s respect for traditional farming methods has naturally led to the environmental awareness of all partners. We see environmental awareness as being critical to the success of organic farming and the maintenance of good natural soil quality and growing conditions. Our land is now a haven for wildlife. Very large old hedges provide shelter and food for many species of birds and mammals. With advice from our local Farming, Wildlife Advisory Group forty acres of land has been taken out of arable production and returned to pastureland with ponds and ‘scrapes’ for the birds. Hedges have been planted and wild flower seed sown in the grassland.

Patrick Hearne

Capel Mushrooms was established in 1962 and is now run by the founder’s sons, Damian and Patrick Hearne. In 1988, faced with the problems of being a relatively small mushroom grower in an increasingly competitive market, Damian and Patrick took the decision to become organic, having dismissed alternatives such as moving into snail farming or rhubarb growing. As one of the first organic mushroom growers in the country, they then faced new problems, not least the lack of a market. However, they persevered and developed a solid reputation as organic growers.

At the main site in Capel St Mary, the compost on which the mushrooms grow is produced and used to cultivate closed cap mushrooms. Compost is also produced for a second site at Trimley, where they grow open cap, brown cap, portobello and portobellini mushrooms. All these mushrooms are, in fact, the same species, Agaricus Bisporus, but different strains and growing times allow the variations. Capel work as part of a co-operative with another organic grower, Gourmet Mushrooms, who produce speciality mushrooms such as Pleurotus (similar to Oyster) and Shii-take.

Purton House Organics

Purton House Organics is a family-run mixed organic farm of 70 hectares outside Swindon and we’ve been growing vegetables and produce beef since the last century. Our farm was born out of the love for excellent quality food, produced in a way that works with nature and creates biodiversity.

Over 20 years ago, while agricultural innovations pushed farmers towards more intensive systems, we decided to turn organic to fit with our genuine love for tasty and healthy food. We wanted to supply veg to pursue our organic ideal and keep producing delicious food. After more than 25 years of farming, our passion for amazing flavours is still there, and we are all proud of the veg, fruit, eggs and meat that we deliver to your door.

We’re proud that our farm has held organic status since 1997. One of our farmers, Rowie Meers, is dedicated to the organic way of life and obsessed with healthy eating, especially unprocessed and raw foods. She is a passionate advocate of ethical farming, sustainability and respect for nature – everything we do at Purton House puts the environment and the animals first.

The real bosses here are the chickens, who ride the tractors and pretty much rule the roost. While the hens hitchhike, Rowie and her sheepdog Loopy take a walk around the farm to check on the vegetables – including the nine polytunnels in which we grow heat-loving aubergines, melons and oriental greens. Staffed by our daughters, nephews, nieces and friends, Purton House is a true family venture – and workers who aren’t related are treated just like they are! Lunch is served to all workers, and anyone idly wandering into the kitchen would find it impossible to tell who was family and who wasn’t.

Langridge Farm

Langridge Farm is situated just outside the market town of Crediton in Mid Devon. Langridge has been farmed by the Govier family since 1969 and is now run by David Govier.

The farm consists of 270 acres of traditional mixed organic land amongst the rolling hills of Mid Devon. The land is split between vegetable production, livestock, mainly sheep and mixed managed woodland, with approximately 170 acres being used for growing wonderful organic vegetables.

The farm started converting to Organic in 1983 and was all fully organic by the growing season of 1988. The soil is all grade 3 with, as David puts in his broad Devonian accent, ‘no flat fields here’.

Grown Green

We grow organic salads, veggies, herbs, flowers and fruit on our 2.5 acre market garden at Hartley Farm near Bradford on Avon in Wiltshire. Kate and her team have been experimenting with new varieties and colourful crops for over 10 years, to grow the best and freshest, triple award-winning organic produce for both body and mind. We work in harmony with nature (although slugs are never welcome anywhere other than the compost heaps!), rather than relying on pesticides and chemical inputs; and love our armies of ladybirds, hoverflies and toads which keep pesky pests in check.

We have four medium and four small polytunnels for growing food all year round, as well as herb beds, a small currant area, and the field which is broken into 5 patches for our rotation of main crops. We have also recently planted a small fruit orchard.

From edible flowers, juicy heirloom tomatoes and fragrant coriander, basil and oregano, to heartier staples such as mixed colour beetroot, kale, leeks and squash, we have a undimmed passion for growing veg in a sustainable way, and love welcoming visitors to the garden to share in the joy of finding new ways to improve the local and wider environment. We are certified organic with the Soil Association and often hold events and farm tours, as well as volunteer parties to encourage those who might not otherwise get the chance to come and enjoy getting their hands dirty, learning about and celebrating fresh organic food.

Cytropic

Cytropic is a family owned business, Ramon and Stella Lucena which is based in Alora, Malaga and started in 2006. Prior to this Ramon worked for one of the largest organic packers and exporters in Andalucia at the time, Ecofruyser.

Previously the majority of production was lemons however over the last three years they have diversified into other vegetable lines; butternut sweet potato, celery, fennel and various types of cabbages. Orange and soft citrus turnover has also increased. Production is now approximately 40% lemon, 40% clementine and orange and 20% vegetables.
